Maglev Lines Under Construction in 2020

As of 2020 there are three new maglev lines under construction. There are two medium-speed lines and one high-speed line where development has already started. The first one to go in to commercial operation is the maglev line for the major economic and transportation hub in China, Qingyuan.

Qingyuan Maglev - China

Construction of the first 8.1 km (5 miles) section of the Qingyuan Maglev is on the way. This will be China's first maglev line dedicated to tourism. The total length is planned to be 38.5 km (23.9 miles). Part of the project, the 387 meters long Henggang tunnel will be China's longest maglev tunnel upon completion. The Qungyuan Maglev is going to emit low noise. The train was measured to emit only 56 decibels at the speed of 100 km/h (62 mph).

Fenghuang Ancient Town Maglev - China

It's going to be China's second maglev line devoted to cultural tourism. It's a joint effort by the Hunan Maglev Group Corporation Limited and the Fenghuang County Government. The 9 km (5.6 miles) long first phase is connecting Zhangjiajie-Jishou-Huaihua High-speed Railway Fenghuang Station with Folklore Park tunnel entrance. The following phase will run from Folklore Park tunnel entrance to the City East Tourist Center. The third and last phase is from the City East Tourist Center to Zhangjiajie-Jishou-Huaihua High-speed Railway Fenghuang Station by passing Yinmajiang Panda Theme Park. All the train stations along the line are planned to seamlessly integrate into the surrounding natural and cultural environment.

Chuo Shinkansen - Japan

The world's longest and most complicated maglev line is already under construction and making frequent headlines about the difficulties incurring during the construction. This comes as no surprise as the maglev line is being built from the ground up and 86 percent of the route goes underground. The Tokyo to Nagaya line is planned to open in 2027 and the route will be completed in 2045 when Tokyo connects with Osaka. The total travel time will be 67 minutes, which is 75 minutes quicker than the current fastest Shinkansen, the Nozomi (N700 series train).
