In light of the problems that TGV trains are having in the channel tunnel, supposedly to do with condensation getting into the electronics? Do we know how, or if, Maglev would encounter such type of problem, or if any testing has been done to stop such problems?

Well the video shows the Netherlands and Dubai. These countries are flat. And that is an understatement. As for snow. Too much snow will stop any means of transportation. But it is indeed true that this design is much more influenced by the weather than a transrapid. Just because it has wheels, it needs a clear track.

This poor deer trotted onto the track near Pritzier district Ludwigslust (Mecklenburg-Vorpommern)and into the path of a high-speed ICE 793 train to Berlin at 11.24 am.

The locomotive suffered a loss of braking as the impact had damaged a pressurized air hose, important for the braking system.

The passengers managed to continue their journey, arriving at 15.02 pm in the capital.

The damaged section could be driven on only one track for several hours. 23 trains were delayed, and three had to be cancelled.

Oh no, not for me! OK I'm not a tec-man, but it runs in a trough and is a big fat wing shape? I believe that wings give planes their lift, so what's to stop it taking to the air? Magnets! And if so, and magnetic forces drive it, won't it be fighting itself and need much more power? The trough idea is much like the Japanese maglev, so is it safe against earthquakes? Can it go up hills, or does it need huge tunnels? And what happens in heavy snow when the trough fills up or something falls in? As I keep saying, I'm not a technical guy, but these are questions that need explaining! No I'll stick to my Transrapid!

Where did you get this from?

The map is a really good overview. I sortof know the American cities, but this makes it much clearer.

It would be cool if they also made a MASSIVE bridge from washington to Florida to connect Miami and Orlando. That would make America the most High-Tech Place in the world.

Imagine being a tourist and doing the Empire-State building and Disney-world in one day!
Or working in Pittsburg and taking the weekend off in Miami!

America really needs this

For the past two months I've been working on a MagLev project as a hobby. I've chosen to use permanent magnets for levitation and Stabilization with electromagnets controlled by a Hall-sensor Feedback. This is a simple setup since you don't have to worry about propulsion and the movement of the car (as for example with the transrapid) and you don't need superconductors (as with the Shanghai Maglev). Nevertheless it is quite difficult. I had to solve problems with overheating (used cooling elements), Noise on the Power supply (used a PC-supply instead of a transformator) and proper component selection and design. Right now however I am stuck, since the design was made around digital Hall-sensors, which don't seem to give the desired effect. I think if I want to continue I should really make a V2. I might have to use a MicroController and proper analog sensor Feedback. It is no wonder it took us so long to go from the wheel to the MagLev!

Check it out:
A second concept by Californian Frank Randak, called AVT SolaTrek, would take cars off highways and load them onto moving maglev trains.
So all cars need to arrive at the same time any way, why take the trouble to load them while moving. It would make more sense to just load carriages end send them on their way, once there are enough of them. And imagine how long the train and trac would be. It would be cool for in an SF-action-movie though.

tubular rail is interesting, but I've seen this before and the thing can't make turns. It's an idea with a major advantage, but these come at a price.

And where is the picture/link for "an air-cushioned train"?

Yeah, but I guess that once you do the design for the propulsion system, you will see that you might do the levitation as well with the magnets.

You need pretty good allignment with the rail. And then you might just as well do the levitation electrically and also have stable ride-comfort and don't require landing gears. The idea to have a aerodynamically better guidance-shape and use an aerodynamic lifting force/ground effect can of course still be applied. I once read that the Transrapid maglev has a Cd of 0.3, while it is aerdodynamically possible to have Cd = 0.07. So definitely room for improvement.

If there's anyone out there? I wondered what your feelings were on Low Speed Urban Maglev? I believe both High and Low speed need to work together?

Quote"
While admitting it's a "pie in the sky" idea and only in the exploratory phase, City Councilman Paul Koretz is looking into an above-ground personalized rapid transit system for the city. This summer, he formed a small task force to study the system, which is currently being used at Heathrow Airport, and consists of pods traveling on a track. "We’re talking either a track or hanging maglev, essentially units that fit 2-4 people, and you program in your destination," said Koretz, describing the idea yesterday at a Los Angeles Current Affairs Forum luncheon at the Wilshire Grand. "[The pods] just take you to your destination, and there’s no stopping, except when you arrive at your location.” Yes, listening to him speak blew our minds, so this morning we called up Marty Taft, who is heading up the three-person task force (which sounds fairly casual in a nature). "From the valley, along the 405, all the way to the LAX, that would be the first backbone route," said Taft, a former engineer for Aerojet Electrosystems. "And then there would be loops alongside that would allow people from places like Century City to use it.

Hopefull news from Las Vegas?

"Quote"
LETTER TO THE EDITOR:

Maglev train an obvious way to boost economy
Albert G. Marquis, Las Vegas

Sunday, Nov. 15, 2009 | 2:03 a.m.

The Wednesday story in the Las Vegas Sun, “Nevada suffers as rest of U.S. recovers,” was sobering indeed.

Las Vegas leads the nation in foreclosures. We have 13.9 percent unemployment (which doesn’t take into consideration the underemployed), 23 percent office vacancy rate, 13.3 percent industrial vacancy rate and 2.6 million square feet of empty warehouse space.

The story concluded, “Hope is not a plan ... It is time for Nevada to do some serious thinking about what we do next.”

What we should do next is support the movement to build the maglev train between Las Vegas and Anaheim, Calif. For starters, American Magline Group estimates that construction will employ 90,000 workers.

Once built, the train would bring 27 million people per year from Southern California to Las Vegas. Trains would depart every 10 minutes for the 310 mph, 84-minute trip to Las Vegas.

Folks could get off work in Los Angeles and go down to the depot for a quick trip to Las Vegas. The trip would be fun and exciting. Visitors would pour into Las Vegas and stimulate our economy.

Some could even choose to live here and commute to Los Angeles. Millions of cars would be taken off the freeways and replaced by the pollution-free maglev train.

The maglev train in China has been operating flawlessly for years. This project can save Las Vegas. All it needs is our support.

OH! So your not building it then? As for T-Rex, ha! I've been married fifty three years!

Sounds like they could have maglev before they finish that then! I was in Aden for two years in the early fifties, and if they work as slow as the gang I had, it will never happen!

Dubailand is part of the Dubai dream, if they will not build it, they will sink like the Titanic! Mcvician, no problem pushing your chair, hopefully you will not end up in the arms of a T-Rex though! I will try to get smileys on the forum.

A few facts that show how massive this project is (and how unlikely at the current state that it will realize in the near future):

- DUBAILAND™ venture is estimated at AED 235 billion
- DUBAILAND™ will cover an area of 3 billion square feet
- DUBAILAND™ has 7 themes: Theme parks, culture & art, science & planetariums, sports & sports academies, wellbeing & health, shopping & retail and resorts & hotels
- DUBAILAND™ has a total of 45 mega projects
Projects currently operational include: Autodrome, Polo & Equestrian Club and Al Sahra Desert Resort
- DUBAILAND™ expects a footfall of 40,000 visitors a day and will contribute to attracting 15 million visitors to Dubai by the year 2015.
The diverse projects under DUBAILAND™ include theme parks, eco-tourism projects, shopping malls, restaurants and residential units that are being developed by UAE, GCC and international investors
- DUBAILAND™ will have a minimum of 55 hotels within its geographical location
- DUBAILAND™ projects a population of 2.5 million people, which includes tourists, workers and residents, once fully operational

Thanks for your question UD,

'Quote'
ps: you seem to be really in the know. Are you in one or another way connected to maglev projects?
'End Quote'

I have studdied Maglev Transport for a number of years and in that time been lucky enough to meet up with a number of very nice and knowledgeable people. As for being connected to any Maglev projects, I have to say 'no'! And at almost 75, it doesn't look like I ever will be! It's just that I firmly believe in it as the transport of tomorrow that my grandkids will enjoy. That's why I joined the forum! It's important to me that the youth of today know it's there. They are the ones who will build it!
"Here endeth the lesson" lol

Oh and Daniel! If they build that 'Dubailand'? If you can push my chair, I'll meet you there! lol. (why don't we have smiley faces?)

I wish the Dubailand would be built, that would be the project that could save the UAE tourism. They had such amazing visions about it, but I believe the Shanghai Disney will get completed sooner than Dubailand will have 1/10th finished - on the other hand let's note that the size of it is like 10x the average Disneyland.
http://www.dubailand.ae/

My personal favorite is the quasi Jurassic Park that they have planned, too bad it is not very likely they will go ahead, and I think Dubai without this candy will not survive, at least not the way they hoped it will do in the future.

Well, they just have to put a "Jules Verne" filter on. When Verne wrote his bestseller "Around the World in Eighty Days" it was also hailed with unbelief, but Phileas Fogg just did it.

Ferry and Rail: London to Suez via Mont Cenis and Brindisi	7 days
Steamship: Suez to Bombay	13 days
Rail: Bombay to Calcutta	3 days
Steamship: Calcutta to Hong Kong	13 days
Steamship: Hong Kong to Yokohama	6 days
Steamship: Yokohama to San Francisco	22 days
Rail: San Francisco to New York	7 days
Steamship & Rail: New York to London	9 days
Total travel time:	80 days

Today, you or me can travel the world without much problems in 48 hours:
London Heathrow 6/01 6:15a to Bombay 6/01 9:40p	10 hrs. 55 min.
Bombay 6/01 11:25p to Hong Kong 6/02 11:45a	9 hrs. 50 min.
Hong Kong 6/02 12:45p to San Francisco 6/02 3:15p	17 hr. 30 min.
San Francisco 6/02 4:30p to London Heathrow 6/03 10:30a	10 hr. 0 min.

So, dreamers are needed to make things go ffwd...

ps: Verne based his Phileas Fogg character on George Francis Train - an American businessman and big train fanatic (what's in a name) and George Bradshaw, a British map-maker and publisher who, in the late 1830s and 1840s began to publish "Bradshaw's Monthly Railway Guide," of Britain's rail network, and in 1847, the first "Continental Railway Guide". Train power, yeah <img src="http://www.maglev.net/forum/bb-plugins/bb-smilies/default/icon_wink.gif" title=";)" class="bb_smilies" />
